Catching Olympic Cheats

Professional Athletes who use performance enhancing drugs should be resigned to the fact that they’re going to be caught out eventually. Arguably, some get out before they are caught. Miguel Indurain was one of the greatest cyclists of all time winning 5 consecutive Tour de France titles. But the year following his retirement, several of his former Banesto team mates were found to be using EPO to increase their endurance and although Indurain never tested positive, there has been a shadow hanging over his victories ever since.
In Beijing, a team of renowned scientists have been working hard to catch the cheats, they will use about 1000 more testing samples than they did in Athens, and more than double those taken in Sydney.
The IOC and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) are also developing new testing techniques, although they won't give details about any new tests that they plan to run at this year's Olympics. "We need the elements of secrecy to try to be ahead of the game," says Don Catlin, founder of “Anti-Doping Research.”
The team in Beijing is expecting to find new versions of EPO and other drugs which improve the oxygen carrying capacity of athletes, especially in endurance events. The IOC has attached a record funding value to the project and is convinced that any cheaters will be caught and thrown out on their ear.
