Could the humble social network be on the way out?
September 22nd 2008 01:43
As Facebook surges through the world social networking market, MySpace is racing to re and de-invent itself.
The decision by CEO, Chris DeWolfe has been to move back to the roots which made MySpace the first social network. The site will return focus to music, pop culture and a proven cash-flowed ad model.
Amongst all the Facebook hype, it’s easy to forget that MySpace was the chicken and the egg in social networking. It was the first to reach 10, 20 and 50 million users. It started the swell of online music artists trying to break out into the industry. It (along with YouTube) championed user-generated content. But now, university students, once trapped in their Facebook bubble are busting out into the big bad world, and they’re taking their beloved book with them.
MySpace does an incredible job at being above average at everything it does. It surpasses hotmail and gmail for messages sent, has 115 million visitors each month and holds several candles up to YouTube in video downloads.
MySpace is beginning to reinvent itself as the first “social portal” according to DeWolfe.
