Fewer Students Pursuing Tech/Computing Degrees

On the back of the mining boom and Australian industry’s thirst for engineers, fewer University students are enrolling in computer-related degrees. As thousands of Baby Boomers begin to retire demand for technical computing jobs is on the increase.
The business community is worried that they won’t be able to find the workers needed to maintain expected growth. The shortage has also been caused by the needs of industry as a whole. With almost every business now requiring tech savvy personnel as part of their expansion towards the Internet, shortage is widespread.
It’s estimated that one in 19 new jobs created in the next ten years will be professional IT positions. “The fact remains that technology permeates all businesses now,” said Lou Gellos, a spokesman for Microsoft Corp. “All companies have that person down the hall to help with computer issues.”
The number of students entering computer sciences and the computer engineering fields at all universities has fallen over the past few years. The trend is running at about a 20 percent decline per annum in the number of students completing bachelor degrees in professional IT fields. Initial enrolment at the 1st year intake level is reportedly down as much as 50 percent in some institutions.
