Toshiba announces HD-DVD burner
January 6th 2007 10:32
In the everlasting battle between next-gen formats Bluray and HD-DVD, it was obvious that one of the major battlegrounds would be the consumer creation market. Of course, that means giving the average consumer the ability to utilise either of the next-gen formats as data storage and as a form of audiovisual media. Of course, a conventional Blu-ray burner has been commercially available for some time already, however there has yet to be a HD-DVD equivalent. Until now.
Toshiba has now announced the SD-H903A, a HD-DVD recorder for the desktop PC. The drive will use both conventional 5.25" form factor - which is used for ATA hard drives and CD/DVD drives - as well as a SATA interface in order to aid for faster transfer. The drive will also be compatible with CD and DVD optical media.
The first-generation recorder will, unfortunately, have recording speed troubles, able to burn 1x HD DVD-R and HD DVD-R DL, 8x DVD-R, 2.4x DVD-R DL and 10x CD-R. While the speeds for HD-DVD and DVD are somewhat understandable, the 10x CD-R threshold is ridiculous, and reminiscent of four or five year old CD-R technology. Nevertheless, being a first-generation drive, it is simply there to set the bar over which future generations will inevitably leap technologically.
The drive is scheduled for OEM release later this month, with proper commercial availability still some months ahead.
