Fox News Joins a Social Network, but Not Its Parent’s Site

Fox News Channel has broken through to social networking. The only thing is…MySpace could suffer as a result. In a twist of fate the Fox News Channel has teamed up with Facebook rather than its natural ally.
But Fox has been positive about the move, saying that the focus is on audience. Facebook is “currently the leading social network” worldwide, says Fox’s Joel Cheatwood,. “They also have a user that’s a little older and a little more sophisticated.”
He might well have said educated, given that Facebook started as a College-only social network. But we’ll let him save face and stick with sophisticated, because lord knows watchers of Fox News are a sophisticated bunch.
The new Fox redesign looks exactly like Facebook, right down to the discussion boards, reviews and polls. It’s really quite astounding.
The feature that will make it popular (if it gets that far) will no doubt be the streamed video window. According to a Pew Research Center study, more than a third of Internet users are members of social networks, so Fox is on the right track with this endeavour, but still behind MSNBC and ABC in the US.
We are yet to see if they will try something in Australia, in fact very few of the news services appear interested in social networking, save for MySpace with its limited msn news service, which is really just an app.
