Google Sceptics slow the Giant’s Growth
September 22nd 2008 02:08
It seems the business world is still wary of Google. Google Apps, while promising, have a ways to go before they can crack the market for corporate software that Microsoft has long dominated.
While a handful of America’s Fortune 500 companies have begun to use some elements of Google’s software range, none have wholly adopted the platform, a reality that Google is none too pleased about.
Last year Microsoft out-sold Google by 3 to 1 in overall software downloads, but although this does represent a significant improvement for Google’s software wing, they have yet to convince the Corporate World. Microsoft still controls a staggering 98 percent of the market for word processing and office software. The very software I am using to write this spiel, dear reader.
Despite being priced at just a 7th the cost of Microsoft’s package, Google Apps still has a long way to climb. Gmail is by far their biggest seller, and it bodes well for them that its uptake in universities has been significant. This of course was the hallmark of the Facebook Revoluation.
IT directors have been reluctant because of Google’s reliance on their new Cloud Computing initiatives. They see risk when they think of storing sensitive information on outside servers, a service that Google is brandishing flagrantly.
But remember, the brand was only launched in 2006 and is still trying to re-invent itself as a software pioneer. And based on Google’s success in other areas you’d have to think they having something up their sleeves.
