How Microsoft Could Ruin Google

September 24th 2008 04:31
Assuming money is no object, and despite the fact that the world is in a credit crisis, for Microsoft this is essentially true. Here’s how the world’s biggest software developer could kill the Search Giant.

1. Buy Yahoo. Do it and do it now! The 20% US Search market share is worth any price. Google knows it. The two would mesh beautifully and be incredibly powerful as a conglomerate.

2. Buy AOL. Why? AOL has 4% of the same Search market share. That gives you ¼ of the US market alone. Not a bad start. AOL also is astoundingly good when it comes to displays of all sorts. A field that the graphic design people at Google must surely be addressing, but as yet have not.

3. Buy Ask.com. Since we’re in the buying spirit. That’s another 8% Search gain. Now we’re talking.

4. We’re done with current search models, but still behind. Now look to the future, buy KallOut and Vibrant Media, both have found new Search portals and models that could help break the “Google it” mentality of consumers.

5. USE FACEBOOK! Yes social networking is the shit. Power Facebook search and promote search options through the social network. Then people won’t have to open a new tab to use Google. And ensure that Google Toolbar is de-activated when Facebook is open.

6. MyLifeBits could be awesome. The Microsoft-funded project is a memex created by digitizing and indexing the entire life of an individual. That’s evertying! E-mail, Phones, Pages, Books, Pictures, Video, University knowledge. It’s all there to be incorporated. Make MyLifeBits a priority!

7. Relaunch Atlas. But make it free. In fact, make the basic versions of most Microsoft products free for individuals. That way businesses will have to use your software because that’s what their employees use at home. Better for business, better for Microsoft.

8. Buy Backchannelmedia. This will bring Search ads to TV. Go back to traditional media, it’s not dead yet. People do still watch Television. Backchannelmedia will let users be more interactive with their advertisements and advertisers will be flocking.

9. Get rid of Avenue A and Razorfish. It’s not impartial and it destroys Live Search’s credibility. Lose that shit.

10. Use Cloud Computing. You need to let your new media empire flourish and Cloud Computing is the way to do that. Over the Next five years Cloud Computing could be the next big technological innovation. Nobody will know anything about it except that it makes the world a hell of a lot faster and more interconnected.

Or, alternatively, Microsoft could continue stuffing around in its software-driven world and ignore Search as a priority. But I don’t think they’re that stupid….are they?
