How Obama Got Social
September 23rd 2008 03:28
Joe Trippi, Howard Dean's 2004 presidential campaign manager says that Barak Obama’s use of social networking during the Texas primary was the most effective political use of the medium in human history.
How did Obama really do it?
1. His campaign launched www.my.barakobama.com
104, 000 Texans joined up almost overnight and were staggeringly receptive to supplying campaign cash
2. Final results came in for fundraising in Illinois. Obama set a new record, raking in $55 million through the social networking site in the previous month.
3. MyBO as it became known became the perfect platform for organising voters in the Primary. Any user could access the names and contact details for people in their area. Subsequently, the Obama supporters were decisively organised.
4. Obama went on to take 99 of the Texan delegates and put a stop to Clinton’s comeback before it had even begun.
5. Obama has taken control of the “New-Media”. Internet access and Social networking have been the biggest boosts to his campaign.
6. But it wasn’t all Obama. By no means. The Obama camp saw early that social networking was THE tool for politics in 2008. So they recruited 24 yr old Chris Hughes, co-founder of Facebook to help develop their web campaign. Genius.
