Japan Pushes Wallet Phone on the World

Japanese companies have struggled to convince worldwide consumers of the superiority of their mobile products in the past. But with the assistance of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, an industry group is read to take the “Wallet Phone” to the world.
The technology relies on a tiny computer chip tagged “FeliCa”, which is embedded in every mobile phone. The device communicates with readers that are employed in stores and public transport stations as well as vending machines.
FeliCa was developed by Sony and is currently being used in many smart cards that are popular in Europe. But Japan hopes this new Industry-Government partnership will give the world better access to the innovation.
The Wallet Phone is by no means a new idea in Japan. They have been widely available for the past 4 years. Most recent models have FeliCa built into them.
Around 90 percent of the mobile phone in Japan use 3G technology and the hope is that the proliferation of 3G technology in the rest of the world will coincide with the take-up of FeliCa.
Conditions in other countries might not be as favourable as in Japan, where Credit Cards have long been held in suspicion. The task first, is to convince retailers to install the reading technology in order for the take up to be exponential, as the partnership is expecting.
The Ministry is planning international missions and seminars to spread the word about Japan's technology.
