Nanowire Light Sensors
August 19th 2008 08:13
Researchers at UCal have engineered the first integrated circuit that incorporates nanowire as both sensor and electrical component. "Our goal is to develop all-nanowire sensors" that could be used in a variety of applications, says Ali Javey, an electrical-engineering professor at UC Berkeley, who led the research.
In the past, nanowire sensors have required integration with electronics to process the tiny light signal. But this has been difficult to achieve on the same surface. Aligning the tiny nanowires has also proved challenging.
But the Berkeley researchers say a new printing method could overcome these two problems and allow for applications like “sensor tapes” that are printed on paper. The next step is to shrink the device to allow for improved resolution and sensitivity.

but, in a nut shell, what will this allow scientists to do?
How can it be applied ot our mundane lives, and frighteningly, what can Big Brother do with it?
