Online Olympics Not Good Viewing

NBC Universal has been one of the few networks worldwide to attempt a mixed coverage of the Beijing Olympics. In fact, NBC is offering more online content than they are on their TV broadcast.
With a multi-screen option that lets you view 4 cameras at once, the NBC Internet service does offer a lot that hasn’t been seen before. The Australian service, provided by a partnership between Channel 7 and SBS is sadly lacking by comparison.
The NBC video is relatively crisp, boasting that you can se the sweat dripping off the athletes in perfect resolution. Perhaps not, but it is good. But the Internet still doesn’t have the same production values as does the Television broadcast.
It’s good for sneaking a little clip at work on a coffee break but you can’t really sit and watch hours of it like you can a TV, nor is having it play in the background on your desktop effective. And sadly the search function is appalling and less than responsive. Not really very liberal.
Some on-demand video is appearing on YouTube in non-US territories through a deal with Google Inc. But surprisingly, The NBC coverage remains easily the best. There might come a time when you can watch any camera at any event but there’s no advertising model yet for that, and until one emerges we’ll probably be paying top dollar for that kind of service. But on the Upside, Camera’s are a bit of a big deal in London so we should get something pretty special next time around. Even Vancouver will learn some valuable lessons.
