Online Video Slowly Killing TV

While networks continue their insistence, saying that television still has a long-term future, recent research suggests that the decline of the box may have already started.
Statistics released this week from the US have suggested that for the first time ever, during May of this year, prime-time viewers failed to watch programs on television sets. According to Integrated Media Measurement, more than 50 percent of online viewers consider watching prime-time shows on online as a valid alternative to television.
While half of the prime-time community is still using their set, almost a third of those are also streaming TV shows online to catch up on episodes they’ve missed, or to re-watch certain scenes. This group seem to be using Internet viewing as a replacement for their old VCR before digital recording becomes more popular and cost/time effective.
Those who are using the Internet more often are generally in the X Generation, well-educated and Caucasian. Interestingly, women are more inclined to watch TV series online, with guys preferring to download content to their hard drives through file sharing and torrent downloads.
“The migration of consumption from one platform to another is only a matter of time,” was IMMI’s conclusion.
Up to 20 percent of all episodic viewing is conducted online at present, that figure could more than double over the next two years as Internet speeds improve in line with infrastructure investment.
