Piclens - The Video Revolution

July 25th 2008 03:44
Piclens has launched a new style of video viewing interface that is reportedly, NOTHING like television. The interface has been developed for searching through dozens tagged photos in a 3D configuration. It literally lets you zoom through images, photos and video stream just by using your arrow keys.

The download is a tiny 2.7 MGB and allows for fast and simple search through Google, Flickr, YouTube and even DeviantArt’s libraries with a few simple keystrokes. But it still has bugs to iron out. It program does occasionally crash Firefox and is not Safari-compatible as yet. Over the next 18 months or so this type of search capability will most likely go from being a novelty to a broad consumer requisite.

Despite the amazing speed at which Piclens lets you travel through photo libraries, it is most effective for video. After you’ve selected your search criteria and YouTube setting a massive 3D Wall of video thumbnails is thrown up on the screen. Stacked three high and covering the entire screen, you can navigate through them at blazing speeds.

It’s not like television at all. In fact, don’t use hallucinogens before you try the tutorial, it could literally BLOW YOUR MIND! The 3D nature is astounding to say the least and is ridiculously easy to get your head around. You almost feel like you’re on one of those huge ladders at a 3 story library zooming across the shelves.

It’s free, it’s fast and there are NO, repeat NO banner ads. Minimal text means you’re not distracted by pesky words. Things really start to get interesting when you consider the applications for new touch screen phones.

But the main problem isn’t for consumers. Advertising are going to be the ones that struggle with this new interface. The search results fly by at such a rate that even inserting a thumbnail into the search results would get it minimal exposure.

The days of searching through page upon page of videos are almost over. Although its marvellous to see, it could make those advertisements that do sneak their way in difficult to distinguish from other content, even more so than is currently the case.

In this new video age, we might need to get a third eye to keep up.
