August 12th 2008 06:13
Pundits have said that the iPhone is democratizing mobile technology. Now, with the launch of the App Store, tricking out your iPhone is the next cool market trend. 20somethings have digressed a decade and are like kids in candy stores.
So what are the coolest and hippest Apps on the Market? Here’s the top 5, a veritable who’s who of unnecessary but undeniably impressive mobile applications that many of your will be perusing before long.
Shazam
Who sings this? With Shazam you never have to ask this question again. Simply record a few seconds of the track you’re listening to with the iPhone’s recording function, store it in memory and the iPhone will browse the web and find you an answer all by itself. SonyEricsson have tried a similar App in the past on their Walkman 580i but it was sadly inadequate. But Shazam also give you the option of downloading the track you’re after using iTunes or even skipping straight to YouTube and grabbing the video clip. Shazam is without a doubt the most popular and widely used App around at the moment.
Save Benjis
The best money saver on the market. Gen Y’s are notorious for their lack of saving power. But with Save Benjis you can save money on almost any product on the market. The App lets you search for any item by its brand name, product number or barcode and then instantly compare its selling price at over 100 online retailers. Not only that, for the ultra-lazy, you can even purchase or order the item straight from you iPhone handset.
Remote
This App fills one of the voids that Apple left in the iPhone. In fact it was one of the first to be released and was probably in production before the iPhone hit the shelves. It’s a very simple App that lets your iPhone communicate with your iTunes library on your Mac or PC. Right now it’s one of the App that iPhone users are playing with the most and is incredibly responsive, fitting seamlessly into the Apple environment
Pandora Radio
Like the old online Pandora, this application lets you select songs you like or hate and will suggest new ones for you to check out automatically. Although a great way to discover new music, as was Pandora, the iPhone 3G’s limited battery life means that this App falls down based purely on lack of quality it has to work with.
Phone Saber
Now the force can be with all of us. Even if you’re never seen a single Star Wars flick you’ll still know what a light saber is. This App turns your humble iPhone into a swooshing beam of light and you into the Jedi master that your Facebook profile proclaims.
