Revolution renamed as "Wii"
May 1st 2006 06:50
The name revolution has been changed to "Wii". Sound like a toddler enjoying his trip down a slide and yelling "Weee". Perhaps that's the idea that Nintendo has in mind - to promote it's new console system towards the younger generation.
But many disqualified the name to be lame and "uncool". Take Gundeep Hora's article on how weird the reason behind naming the console "Wii" is. I can't comprehend with the statement made my Nintendo, about how the two "ii"'s in the name suggest the image of two people playing together. And although 3 letters long, the name feels awkward to say, regardless of what language you speak.
To begin with, Nintendo does not intend to compete with the already-regining Xbox 360, and the soon to reign, Playstation 3. In theory, its marketing tactics should be a "Wii" bit more creative to aim at the younger crowd, particularly those have been fans of the Mario sagas and other hits on GameCube and Nintendo's Gameboy systems.
With the Gameboy frenzy slowly saturating, coupled with the strong market presence of Sony's PSP, Nintendo sure must be desperate to maintain its market position.
But, for all this, reviewers may focus on the hardware/software performance of Wii once it debuts, regardless of its name. With competition heating up, with the much hyped Playstation 3, we will just have to see whether Nintendo can survive the tide with its game titles.
