Skype and censorship in China

April 21st 2006 07:40

Skype has taken the Chinese pressure into serious hands, with its censorship of particular "sensitive" words and phrases such as "Falun Gong", "Dalia Lama", and "Tiananmen Square" in text mesages. Not only this, but in recent months, Skype has been facing incredible pressure for the Chinese government regarding the losses made by telecommunication companies due to the increased use of the Slype-to-Skype free voice service.

Niklas Zennstrom, chief executive and founder of Skype, was quoted by The Financial Times as having no choice but to comply with censorship laws and regulations in a country if he chooses to do business there; China being no different.
