When Gizmodo announced that the iPhone would be announced on Monday, everyone got excited. After years of speculation, the iPod-mobile combination would finally come to pass. In its true form too - none of this iTunes-equipped Motorola equipment we had to suffer under with the Rokr.
Monday came, and the iPhone was announced... sortof. It turns out that Apple isn't the only one with interest in the iPhone name - in fact, Linksys have had rights to the iPhone name since 1996. Monday saw the announcement of a new line of Linksys iPhones, the CIT400, and the WIP320. So why should you care? They're ugly, sure, but they have integrated Skype and Yahoo! Messenger capability.
The first model, the CIT400, is a Dual-Mode Internet Telephony Kit, with a base station that is physically connected into the home network. The phone itself is wireless, and allows people to make Skype-based calls without the need of a computer.
The second model, the WIP320, is a fully portable mobile with Skype capability wherever there is a wireless access point. The phone utilises Wireless-G technology so it is pretty much accessible for any wireless point available, which means pretty much anywhere as long as you live in San Francisco, or maybe the highest density areas of major cities.
"The next generation of handheld devices, Linksys iPhone voice solutions and products are changing the way people communicate with their friends, family and colleagues," said Mike Pocock, Linksys senior vice president and general manager. "The development of the iPhone family demonstrates our flexibility in selecting the right partnerships, feature sets, and product designs to exceed the demands of even our most connected customers to whom the Internet is no longer a destination, but an inextricable part of their lives." iPhone products are expected to retail for between $79.99 and $369.99.
